COGAT Scores
he Cognitive Abilities Test, or CogAT, tests three different types of abilities.
-
VERBAL
This section assesses your child's capacity to recall and manipulate sequences of English words. It measures their comprehension of word meanings and their ability to draw inferences from them.
-
QUANTITATIVE
This section focuses on numerical reasoning. It evaluates your child’s ability to identify relationships among numbers and equations. Tasks may include predicting the next number in a sequence and constructing equations using numbers and symbols.
-
NONVERBAL
This section primarily assesses geometric reasoning and spatial skills without reliance on verbal elements. Your child will be asked to identify similarities among shapes, for instance.
The scores listed on the CogAT Narrative compare performance to students in the age group. A score of 100 is average for the age group. Most students fall within 16 points of the average (84 to 116). A score of 130 indicates that the child demonstrates advanced development and accelerated proficiency in verbal, quantitative, or nonverbal reasoning skills compared to their peers within the same age range.
